The Orthodox Church in China

On the second Sunday after Pentecost (this year, Sunday July 3, 2016), the Orthodox Communities in Southeast Asia celebrate the Synaxis of the Chinese Orthodox Christians who were martyred in Beijing during the so-called “Boxers” (Fists) Revolution in the year 1900.

This year, on Sunday July 3, 2016, the Synaxis of the Chinese Martyrs was celebrated at the Cathedral Church of the Apostle Luke in Hong Kong, presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan of Hong Kong and the Far East, Nektarios.

Verses
China too has Christ-bearing Martyrs,
Ever raising their hands on her behalf.
The land of the Chinese has borne the fruit of God-loving Martyrs.

Commemoration
In the saving year 1900, when the revolution of the so-called “Boxers” (Fists) was proclaimed by the Queen Mother who then ruled the vast land of China against all foreigners, the Orthodox faithful in Beijing — numbering two hundred and twenty — also found a martyr’s death, while some others, losing heart, denied the evangelical truth. Leading them all was the Christ-souled priest Metrofanis Tsi Sung, following whose example his wife Presbytera Tatiani, his sons Isaiah and John, Maria the betrothed of Isaiah, as well as Paul Guan, the teacher Ia Guen, the eight-year-old John, Klemes Kui Kin, Matthew Hai Tsuan, his brother Vitos, Anna Sui, and many others whose names the crown-bestowing Lord of life knows, were martyred in various ways.

Doxastikon of Matins of the Chinese Martyrs

Glory. Plagal Fourth Tone.
Having eagerly walked the path of Martyrs, O God-loving ones, strengthened by the hope of the life to come, you nobly disregarded the things of this world as if they were nothing; and burning with love for the Lord, you received a divine crown like athletes through unbearable torments. Therefore, rejoicing in Paradise, remember your brothers of the same blood, and intercede unceasingly with the Lord on behalf of the remnant of Orthodoxy in your homeland, O blessed ones.
